Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality Harmonic Balancer install tool that won't break the bank? It seems lots of low quality ones break off in the crank, something I want to avoid.

Anyone have a recommendation?

That puller can also be used for steering wheels.

If you're really budget conscious and never expect to use the puller/installer ever again, you could save some money by using some threaded rod that will fit the threaded blind hole in the end of the crank, a 3/16-1/4 inch-thick metal plate with a hole in the center for the threaded rod, a One-Piece Steel Thrust Ball Bearing (optional but really helpful), an extra-thick oversized washer, and an oversized nut. Line up the balancer on the end of the crank, screw the threaded rod into the end of the crank and grease it up with some wheel bearing grease, slide on the metal plate, the thrust bearing and the washer onto the rod, then screw on the nut. If you elect to not use a thrust bearing, use two greased-up extra-thick oversized washers. Put a wrench on the nut and start turning until the balancer is seated.

You can get a metal plate from the scrap pile at any metal supply yard for the cost of scrap metal (I think it's about a buck per pound) and they may even be able to punch a hole in it for you…for the threaded rod to fit through. All thread rod and nuts can be had from any hardware store worth its weight in salt. From McMaster Carr, I got some specialty washers (~$6.50 for a pack of five) and a thrust bearing (~$20.00) for a different job but they can be used for this job.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Oops,Embarassed  totally slipped my mind. I think O'Reilly does that too. I absolutely agree that's the most economical way to go.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have done the loan a tool thing before, but wanted to buy one as I will use it again in the future. I was looking at this OEM Tools set, as I can get it locally and it covers more than just a SBC. It seems to have decent ratings.

I forgot to mention, I already have a Lisle remover in my tool box. That is how I removed the damper.
