Rear Axle Casting Number location
Ok, so I picked up my Haynes Chevelle book and am looking up where to find the rear axle casting #/stamp. I looked at the pic in the book (which says.."Typical Rear Axle Casting Number Location") but I think the darn Pic is posted upside down...or might be one of those darn G-Bodies. Anyway I looked for the stamp and did not find it easily. Sprayed w/ wd40 also to cut through some of the crud. Can anyone post a pic of theirs or let me know where to look for a 77...I'm a bit lost. I have a posi but am not 100% sure it's original to the car so trying to find out what I have to work with.

Re: Rear Axle Casting Number location
Don't have a pic of mine, but my 1977 Chevrolet Service Manual describes it as "axle identification number located on the front of the right axle tube, about (3) inches outboard from the differential cover. A typical code number is HKB 218 D W."
Hope this helps.

TY. Will look again or use more cleaner. Still confused though if it's outboard from the diff cover then shouldn't it be the rear of the axle tube? I assume that the cover is what bolts on to the back of the Diff, no?

Re: Rear Axle Casting Number location
Suppose you have to eyeball the right edge of the differential cover from the front of the axle tube. Take a wire wheel or Dremel and try cleaning some of the rust off and let me know if you find it. I'm too lazy to go out and put mine up on the ramps so I can crawl under there.

Its almost half way between the pumpkin and the brake backing plate on right side of car facing front of car. I sanded mine down with steel wool and used clear gloss spray can on it to make it easier to see next time. In my case it did me no good because later on I replaced everything internally. JB

Found it......AD 1 219 ( I think). Looked in the forum and found page w/ ratio & rpo codes etc....
No "AD" for 77 but found in 1976...3.08 ratio? No Posi?
Now i'm even more confused.

It's a rear axle built between 1973 & 1976 with 3.08 open rear & was assembled in Canada on August 7th, unless it was a leap year, then it was assembled on August 6th.
Pop open the rear diff & count the gears if you want to be sure. A gasket only costs a couple of dollars, there's only 10 bolts, & it's a good reason to clean all of the gunk out & put new fluid in. Post up a pic if you are unsure of which posi has been installed. Someone could tell you if you are running an lsd, locker, or spool. You could also spin the ring gear around & read the numbers on it to tell your ratio.

Sometimes the number of teeth for ring & pinion are stamped in the outer edge of the ring gear.

Will a 3.08 handle 425 horsepower?
