horsepower guess
Can't tell what head is on it yet before I tear it off, but heres the specs:
headman headers
holly carb
edlebrock intake manifold
msd ignition
3 inch exhaust
summit racing cams
chevy 350
I THINK its a vortec head though.

Re: horsepower guess
Not a "Vortec" style head because it doesn't have the center bolt valve covers. As far as hp rating, that will depend on head work, cam size, carb size and a slew of other things.

Re: horsepower guess
my 0-60 is roughly 6 seconds(using a timer). Ill pull it apart when I go to do some work and get the specs to determine it. The guy I got it from said its over 300 but it needs tuned, so i'm wondering just what that will put it at after tuning. He worked in a shop on this thing for over 2 years, i'd assume its all pretty high end. Headman headers, holley 650 carb, cam size is still in question. that info help any?

I was going to guess that it wasnt a vortec either but I did a quick google and found these.

Re: horsepower guess
I'd say take the valve cover off. There should be a casting number in there some where. Then google the number and see what pops.

Re: horsepower guess
There should also be a part number on the Edelbrock manifold in the back on the drivers side. Cross referencing that P/N should also tell you as vortec heads need a vortec intake. Is that car a Cougar or Mustang BTW?
Joe - those heads you found on Jegs, why is there so much meat missing at the exhaust ports? Is it because they will only mate to one style of exhaust manifold? I have vortec heads albeit for center bolt & they don't look that way.
Edit My bad- went through my pics & mine (Comp Cams) are missing more meat than the Chevy:

Re: horsepower guess
You got me on that one. Maybe something about the exhaust port size or dimension? I'm not familiar with vortec style heads. When I saw that the valve covers had the outer bolts I thought they couldnt be vortecs then I did a little search. I thought I remembered seeing something odd about them.

Re: horsepower guess
That picture sucks once you enlarge it and without seeing one first hand it's hard to tell. The description said the Exhaust port was D shaped so that may be what we're seeing. It's a stretch but do you have access to a dial indicator to measure the cam lift?

Re: horsepower guess
Oops-see edit above. They're similar to the ones I got...
They fit the block & I have headers that fit as well. The head gasket is evident on the block surface after install but it can be painted & made less noticeable.

Re: horsepower guess
I really need to figure it out, and btw it's actually a camaro. Funny enough, I know under the hood reminds me of a mustang as well. Just looking at it from the picture.

so am I. but with my work load lately, Im probably just going to pay my local shop to do it. they charge 25/hr for labor. And I need new tools so it would almost be cheaper.

Re: horsepower guess
The thing with tools is they do pay for themselves. I have a small investment compared to most guys on here I'm sure. Labor rates here in MA are like 90/hr with a good deal being 50-60 bucks. $25/hr a super deal.

Re: horsepower guess
You should have a decent engine there, with all the good parts in it. Only thing I might mention is that the 3-inch exhaust system can lose a bit of power over a 2 1/2 inch system. The velocity of the flow isn't as much as with a 2 1/2 inch system. This has been discussed at length on other forums, and it's not just my opinion.

Re: horsepower guess
well even though it was basically built this way, i'll be going for maximum power so if it's below 300 (probably isnt) then ill be swapping in a vortec head and new intake. it runs like crap on anything under 89 gas, and even then it's not great. 91 runs great so that should tell me the compression ratio is higher than usual. just wish i knew what head was on it ugh its bothering me. i wonder if you guys could identify it if i sent close up pics

Re: horsepower guess
Inside the heads might look like this if they are GM.
Shouldn't be too hard to decode them.
