how to count axle splines? Empty how to count axle splines?

If I remove the cover from my 10-bolt 8.5" 73 chevelle can I count the splines without removing things? It's the original c-clip rear but the previous owner had work done before I bought it and I need to verify things for future mods.thanks.

Not 100 percent certain, but I don't think you will be able to see the splines without completely removing the axle all together.

you are right, you won't be able to count the splines w/o pulling a axl. Our cars had 28 spline axls pretty much across the board, 30 spline axls came later.
