Re: Where are you at picture
Very cool Kevin. I've always wondered about the "Oval" exhaust. Did you get the pipes to go over the rear diff too?

Re: Where are you at picture
Thanks. What I am going to do is fit this up first and then have them make me some turn outs that exit in front of the back tires like some old NASCAR racer. I will have a lot of trimming to do but I think it will be well worth it.

In the last pic, Is that a fuel pump?

Re: Where are you at picture
Yes it is. I made the cross brace and mounted the pre-filter and pump on it. I measured everything out and it fits. My exhaust will exit before the rear tires or dump. I have to see what I can fit in there. It is a Holley HP 125. These pumps are large to say the least so some "magic" had to happen. Here is a pic of me fitting it in and the tank with the 1/2" pick up unit.

Looks better now.

Re: Where are you at picture
Thanks for re-posting the pic. I missed it earlier in the thread. That is a slick idea. I need to re-vamp my fuel system. The stock system is at it's limit. I couldn't find a good spot to mount a pump even with or below the tank.

Re: Where are you at picture
No worries. I still need to finish the front part of the fuel system. I have one more filter to mount. I also just received my clutch kit today so now I have everything to bolt my engine to my transmission. That will be a HUGE day for the project. Then I can put them in the frame and have my driveshaft built. Speaking of the frame, today was the first day it was taken off of the trailer that I built it on. Took me about 8 months of working under a tree, on a trailer, in the Texas weather to get to this point. So, a little before and after pics.

Re: Where are you at picture
I had time to get the engine off the stand today and onto the rolling cradle. My engine had lived on that engine stand all year. I pulled the trans close to take a pic. My friend is coming over next weekend and we are going to bolt everything together. After that it's off to it's new home in the rebuilt frame. g3chevy, where are you at???

Re: Where are you at picture
revinkevin,
I spent some time under the car to try and fit a pump like you have. I hate to rain on your parade but, Is the tank going to clear your new cross brace with the pump? I only have a few inches between the diff cover and the front of the tank. I can get a measurement if you like. Maybe you are OK but I guess you wont know for sure until you get the body on. It's a great idea and hopefully everything fits.

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey. That is what the notch in the brace is for. That is where the tubes from the sending unit come through. I had the tank in my car/old frame when I made this. It is tight but it all fits. Then I transferred it to my other frame. The seam of the tank goes under the brace just a little.

Re: Where are you at picture
Nice work. Did you dial in the scattershield? How far off were the block dowels? Also, what thickness shims did you need for scattershield parallel ?

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey Joe. The dowels on the block lined up right with no issues. Unfortunately this is when I had to make a Lowe’s run for some hardware. I asked my friend and he said he didn’t put any shims in. He did have a daily indicator out but I don’t know what he did with that. My problem now is I am almost 1/2” off on my motor mounts. I can’t get the engine to line up in the frame. I bought some mounts for the engine side that fit perfect. I also bought the motor mounts for the big block Laguna for the 73/74 year. I also tried with the stock mounts and the same thing happens. I put 2 rods through the motor side mounts and have 17”. The frame mounts are 16 1/2. No amount of fooling around with them gets me close.

Re: Where are you at picture
Interesting. I've only once seen the factory block dowels be correct after checking with a dial indicator. And no shimming of the housing? Wow, interesting.

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey Bill. Thanks for the pic. That is where I have the mounts. I am getting a little over a half inch difference between the holes on the engine brackets and the ones on the motor mounts. When you go to install the engine the same difference is the same as the hole alignment. What year where the engine mounts I got from you? They were off of one of your G3 big blocks so they should be fine. I will look for some different ones tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

Re: Where are you at picture
The engine bracket mounts are BB specific. They should have some numbers on them you can google or GM parts wiki to see if you have the BB ones. OPG or someone carries the correct brackets if you strike out.
My frame mounts do overhang on the cross member as shown in Bill's pic.

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey 73SS, thanks for the input. I have searched for a more than a few hours on this topic and Bill and myself have talked about it as well. I can't seem to cross reference my part number of 0334605 that I got from Bill for what year it is but I did find this article. I might have to try spacing the block away from the mounts I have to try and gain that elusive 1/2".

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey Kevin, those motor mount brackets came out of a 66 SS Impala with a 454. So I'm thinking they should be the same as the ones on my 75 El Camino 454. I can take pics of them tomorrow for reference if you think that will help. Otherwise I can bring them down to you next time we get an opportunity to work on your beast.

Re: Where are you at picture
Hey. I have found that the G3 cars had their own mount for 73-75 big blocks. They don't make this part any more. It's funny that the El Camino has it's own mounts for some reason. I have seen some people have used the small block mounts and brackets. GM made the different mounts for the BBC cars to slightly adjust where the engine sits in the frame. It's not much but the article above does show the difference that you and I have talked about and measured before. On another note, I did a complete torque on the suspension today. I need to get this engine in the frame so I can measure for my driveshaft and swap my body.

Re: Where are you at picture
That was a good article. I didn't realize these mounts were big block specific. I bet we could modify your set to match the ones I have. Or we could trying shimming the motor mounts like the article says. Either way, we can make it work one way or another.
