Re: Motor and Tranny IN !!
Does any body know much about Chevy block casting numbers. that old motor definitely ain't original to my car, and it AIN'T a chevelle engine, there are no letters on the block, only numbers. It appears to be a REALLY old motor.
And here's what my buddy has up next, 442 convertible!

I had the #s written down, now i can't find the paper it was on, i'll get 'em tomorrow and get them on here.
It was on like 7-8 digits long, and only numbers. The Chevelle reference book I've got says that all chevelles since 64 had a mixture of letters and numbers on the block.
Yeah, Kyle, that Olds is going to be very nice when done-original 4 speed car too.
The Shelby is perfect, guy who owns it is taking it to one of thebig auctions this year.
The 61 Vette just left the shop about a month ago, as did the 55 Bel Air and the GTO Judge.
Supposed to be a Super Bird coming this fall. I love that place.

Thanks, JB
Oh yeah, many shows scheduled this year- My father in law puts on one May 15th, I plan on that one being the first one I get to with everything done, all the way up to the street rod show at Iroqouis in October.
You gonna make it out to any?

Re: Motor and Tranny IN !!
Well if that ain't a common enough casting!? It's a 350, probably the factory one. This casting was used from 69-79 in trucks, Chevelles, Corvettes, Camaros, Novas, etc. It's also the same casting used for the 302 in 69 & the 70-72 Corvette motors. Some are 2 bolt main, some are 4 bolt main. Should be some date castings on the block to let you know for sure, but I bet it's the factory 350.

Re: Motor and Tranny IN !!
Maybe. The chevelle reference book I have shows every year having some sort of letter designation on the blocks. Could be horse hockey.
There are some other stamps on the other side, but too small and worn for me to make out-only a few digits visible.
This was a two bolt btw.
Also, the guy who is letting me use his shop said ther was some indicator on there that leads him to believe it's an older block-can't remember what it was, but some sort of mounting point that hasn't been in use since the mid/late sixties.

Re: Motor and Tranny IN !!
Naa you need the date code, Should be back on the bellhouseing flange near that long casting number, I had a 77 monte carlo all original had a 350 with that same casting number. The only way to figure out what it came in was the prefix code on the bad at the front of the engine on a pad sticking out in front of the pass side head. should be some letters and numbers.

Re: Motor and Tranny IN !!
Where would I look for that half dollar size stamp?
I've been over it pretty good, and those are the only ones that I can see, other than the stuff on the other side of the block, on the lip above where the starter mounts.

X2! Clean, modern, & goes with whatever color you decide to paint it if you ever decide to. Orange looks nice for restorations, but black is so much better.
