Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Update: Well finally makin the cutlass's debut at the race track tomorrow. After a series of new car bugs getting worked out it should be interesting to see what she runs. The motor is just a plain jane 455 out of a toronado with C heads, Performer Intake, W-30 spec cam, and a Holley 780. TH400 with reverse valve body and bigger converter not sure what the stall is off the top of my head.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Depending on gears, track conditions, & driver ability I'm saying low 13s to high 12s. I might be wrong on this, but that's why I'm just guessing. Good luck & report back to us.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
4.10 gears, definately wont have a problem spinning. Car has 11.5 inch MT ET Streets. Rago, I think your on target thats what I was thinkin. Probably low 13s outta the gate and once shes finely tuned be down in the 12s

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Well finally made two track appearences. Car went 13.80s. Car is only running 4800 RPM thru the traps so i think a new gear is in order. If any one has a 4.88 gear for 8.5inch 10 bolt let me know.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Something doesn't sound right. 4800 RPMs should be around 95mph, correct? You should be faster than that with your combination. Your times & speed are more representative of a mild small block car or maybe a stock fox body stang. IDK, I need my morning cup of joe to get my brain thinking. I do know that the stock 1970 W30 ran 14.2@100 on skinny bias ply tires & 3.91 gears though. That mph should be a decent indicator of how bad the tires were. Your motor sounds like it's essentially a stock W30 type build so that's why the comparison.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Without looking it up, I would think the 11.5 MTs would have a rather large overall diameter. This would keep your speed down in the traps. Actually 13.80 aint nothing to sneeze at for a stock engine. Yes, you have the torque to spin them slicks, but try borrowing someone elses slicks that are pretty wide without being so large around and see what happens. Can't hurt to try if you can borrow some. Might save you some money on new gears! JB

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
94 and some change mph and the tires are 28 in tall. I have a set of hoosier 9 inch slicks but they are 28 inches tall as well. a 26 in tire would look rediculous in these massive wheel wells. lol And yes its pretty much a w-30 build. Im gonna take the car out again next week the same way it is now and see if it stays consistent. Then ill start changing things but even with a smaller tire i think a gear is still in order. I figure that car should be pulling about 5600-5800 thru the traps

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
You spin those kind of RPMs in an Olds BB & you better have your oiling system modified well enough to handle that stress. Just saying.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Got the new rear bumper sank last night, will have pictures up soon. was able to ditch plastic fillers, just have to fab up two new mounts to pull the sides in a little bit. Car is getting the gear tomorrow, should have it back in time to still get some testing done tomorrow night. Hopefully next week I will have the front bumper sunk (sank idk).
Right now the car's 60 foot times are 1.78. the car gets up and goes but just runs out of balls by the 1/8th mile.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
A 1.78 time is great! Wish mine would do that. Once the first 60 feet are taken care of the rest will come with hard work. JB

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Got the new gear in, went out wednesday for a little testing and its was 95* so the track was awful. Couldnt get the car to hook at all. It did pick up my trap RPM to about 5900 or 6000 from 4800. So I was happy. Track should be decent tomorrow they actually prep it on race day.

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
Thanks. Right now the scoop is just rivited on the steel hood. This winter I have lots of body work to do, Mold the scoop to the hood and fix that nasty rot under the vinyl top. Has anyone ever cut the crash bars out of the doors? Im looking to gut the doors this winter as well

Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
I dont know how many times I have been tempted to cut out those door crash guards, but I alweays come to my senses. Down in the 12s is fantastic. Keep up the good work. JBoldstofty wrote:Thanks. Re: 77 Cutlass Updates with pictures
My car is pretty much a full out race car, only drivin to track and home. and plus it has a 6pt roll cage, im not worried about safety. Thanks JB I was extremely happy with that number in the heat. I just wish my track hooked like Norwalk. My track I run 16lbs in my Et Streets, Norwalk-23lbs and dead hooking when the track temp is 125*
