Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
Thanks for the pic. I do have some holes up there which I plan on using for mounting a bracket of some sort.

It's been about 30-years since I last had the dash pad out of the car (I may also be getting senile ) but I seem to recall that on the back/inside of the dash pad itself, there were studs for mounting the amp similar to the studs used to mount the AC vents.Joe73 wrote:I checked above the glove box for any studs.

"Here is what Zucchi is referring to. I removed this from my car many years ago when I did a dash swap. I do not remember where it was mounted behind there. I included a pic of the mounting holes, You would still need to fab a bracket to make use of them. My car must have had the optional stereo. It still has the dual speaker mount for the dash that was shown recently on another post, and it still has the factory wiring for the rear 6X9's in the trunk to this day. I still have the speaker covers for the underside of the speakers in the trunk. The factory radio was long gone when I got the car.
Does anyone have a pic of what the correct factory radio looks like, for a 73? I have several Delco radios but would like to see a pic of the correct one."
Here's a 73 dash I have with the factory original radio. Let me know if you like me to take a close up pic.

Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
I just checked behind the dashpad itself. Yes, there are two standoffs about 2" tall. Something can easily be threaded into them. I might give it a shot. Thanks again for the idea.
Here is a pic of my original 73 am radio. Probably not what your looking for since you have the factory dual 6x9s out back. Mine was just a dash speaker from what I can tell. Pic doesnt do the radio justice.

I'm glad you found them; helps convince me that I'm not going senile… yet.

Thanks for the pics guys. That will give me a general idea of what it looks like as far as the numbers and color, I think GM used green lettering on some models.
Joe in all your years of working on these cars you've never seen that heat sink? Also, I really like how your inner fender wells turned out.

Thanks. Im happy with the inner fenders as well. I actually dont remember any of my other 9 73 chevelles having anything other than an aftermarket or am radio.

Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
These are some pictures from the original salesman's optional equipment catalog and the sales brochure for 1973. My '73 was missing the original radio but did still have the amp behind the dash installed. I ended up installing a refurbished '76 model that allowed for four speaker outputs and you'd need to be real A-body obsessive to know it wasn't the one that came with the car, if you even could. The last picture is how to decode the label on the side of the radio if it is still there.73ss wrote:

I can check my radio this weekend. I never removed it during the CD craze and made an aluminum mount inside the glovebox or a DIN CD player. My OEM radio has been in the dash since 73'.

Id like to know if the radio had any support brackets or is it just held to the dash by the knob stud nuts.

Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
I thought they had the stud on the back to hang on a little bracket in the rear. Even sometimes a piece of band steel with all the holes drilled in it.

Thats exactly how Ive always installed aftermarket radios. I have my original AM radio that came with the car but there arent any support brackets and I dont know if there supposed to be any.

Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
I recall there's one bolt (or bolt hole) on the side of the factory radio that attaches to the steel dash support. I could take a look at the service manual and illustrated parts manual when I get home from work this evening.

On the driver's side of the radio there is a hole that a bolt slides into. That bolt fits into a slot on a metal plate mounted on the driver's side of the radio opening.

I know these are not for a 73 but I have the stock am radios from my 77 El Camino and 74 Malibu and I have an am/fm from either a 76 or 77 Malibu that I found in a box in the back seat of a junkyard Malibu. The am/fm still had the side bracket attached to it and the am’s have the slot to attach to the same bracket.

To The Owner of the 1973 Chevelle SS 350 4 speed car, if you would like a copy of the Chevelle Report 1973 Silver anniversary Issue, let me know, the entire issue is devoted to the 1973 Chevelles. I will include the receipt for you . All are done on gloss paper. The last one i had done was about 16.00. My car is on the cover, 454 4 speed.. Take your time and do the car right, all the details add up and be worth it in the end. Thanks, Mitch

Re: 1973 Chevelle SS, 350, 4spd. build
Just wanted to pass along and idea that worked well for spraying door panels that have an insert that cant be painted. I wanted to spray my upper 73 door panels but they have the wood grain surrounded by some chrome leaf. I did not want to put any tape on the chrome because I think it would peel easily. So my friend suggested to coat it with vaseline. It was the idea I needed. I first cleaned the panels with Simple green since they have been in storage for a couple decades. Then I cleaned them with SEM Soap. Then I carefully applied the SEM Vinyl Prep and wiped in only one direction as recommended. I did not get any vinyl prep on the chrome or woodgrain. I then masked off the perimeter of chrome, took a glob of vaseline and coated the area. Pulled the tape and proceeded to shoot the panels. Three coats with a 10 min. flash. I let it dry for about 30 minutes and then took a rag and used my fingernail around the perimeter. To my surprise, everything came off perfectly. Thought Id pass this along in case someone needs an idea. BTW, the SEM color coat mixture numbers are correct for 73 and 74 Neutral color interiors. Color matches exactly to the reverse side of the bench seat pivot covers and the rear wall panels.

BY THE BY I decided to use my 73 Laguna Panels instead and they match perfectly to the dash and seats (Grand prix seats have like a rib in the padding) and the Lines in the Laguna door panels Kinda match it in a way Wished I would have got them Before wasting paint on them LOL oh well live and learn I guess
